FIFTY IN FRONT (G2)
Y11 16.2HH CHESTNUT STALLION - WON OVER 8-12F DIRT
|
Personality: It's rather hard to recognize the current Finn as the same horse that stepped off of the trailer late in his two year old year. That Finn had been angry, aggressive, and violent. He'd been fine around other horses, but awful with people, leading us to the conclusion he may have been mistreated early in life. However, he began bonding pretty quickly with his assigned exercise rider, Tigris. It was a shaky start, and there had been some blood drawn along the way, but now you would never be able to tell. Finn is still very coltish and a little pushy in his demeanor, but he is not violent or mean like he used to be. He behaves the best for Tigris - they have found a ground of mutual respect, and the colt generally doesn't act out when he's at the helm. He can be a little more trouble for some of the other staff, but it's never worse than some pulling and general friskiness. He's got a pretty great dislike of being stalled, and is a pain to get both in and out. He's either got to be bribed or pushed to get in, and he can bullet out the door if you give him half a second. He's much more manageable to work with if he's pastured, and since he's easy to catch Cole has agreed to let him stay on pasture permanently while he's at home. This has worked well in two ways - the first being he's just generally in a happier mood, and the second that he knows there's a race coming up if he is stalled, and he's more likely to tolerate it. He's normally pretty relaxed around other horses - unless he's under saddle. As soon as the girth is tightened, he enters competition mode. He gets a lot more high strung, so they try and keep him somewhere quiet until just before a race so he doesn't get excited too quickly. He becomes aggressive toward other horses once they move onto the track - not violent aggressive, but his competitive streak definitely kicks in. He doesn't try to run away like he used to, as long as Tigris is up and asking him to rein it in. He's okay for other riders, but Tigris is really the only one that can bring out his best. Where he used to be a nightmare, Finn has become a truly determined athlete, and Valkyrie is really looking forward to a great career out of him.

Grade 2
8-12 furlongs
Turf [Good] Dirt [Great]
Race Results:
41 | 11 - 16 - 8 85%
Running Style: Versatile
Though he's not as runaway aggressive as he used to be, Finn still very much prefers the lead. He'll gun straight out of the gate to the front, keeping an eyes out for anyone coming to challenge. If another horse does fight him for the lead, he'll want to battle it out - however, Tigris is able to get him under control, and they'll settle about a length behind the leader fairly quickly and without much fuss. Though Finn prefers the front, he runs just as well from the preceder position. He'll sit cool for the race, but each furlong brings a little bit more eagerness, and a little more drive. Because he gets impatient, he'll move of on the leader on the final turn if he doesn't have to go too wide to do it. As soon as they hit the stretch, you'd better watch out. The colt's got a lot of stamina and a lot of power, so he'll rocket forward the moments he's asked to. It's the same if he's in the front - as soon as the stretch opens up, he's ready to go. He drives on as if his life depends on it, and only gets better if someone challenges. He's not the type to give up, and will fight like wild to get ahead. If he doesn't come past the wire first, he won't slow down until he passes the winner, so it's best just to let him truck on until he feels better. He never forgets a loss, and is likely to come back two fold the next time around.
